Apps Solve Problems — What is Yours Solving?
How to turn your genius idea into an APP
Have you ever thought about a problem you or someone else has that could easily be solved by an app? You probably have, even without realizing it, because today with the right design, apps can eliminate more problems than you think.
Before creating and monetizing your mobile app, it is vital to write a clear business plan that walks investors through an overview of your app, also known as a pitch deck. In order to launch your app, you need to source capital that will transform your idea into a business. A pitch deck is your best friend because it connects investors with your business — what problem it seeks to solve, how it solves it, how it can survive competition, and essentially, the story of your app. Sitting between your idea and the launch is capital, which can be secured with an enticing pitch deck.
Today, I am going to introduce you to my very own start-up. After reading through my pitch deck and following my design thinking process, you should be able to identify the winning formula for pitching your very own business idea!
Let's get pitchin’!
#1) THE STORY
Hi! I’m Romy, a Creative Industries student, brand strategist, and a fanatic of working out. With gyms shutting down this year, and my social life being placed at a halt, I admit that working out has become a gruesome task. I have felt a lack of motivation from myself and former workout buddies because sometimes we just need that extra push from our friends. This year, many of us have had to get creative with our workouts, but I do have to admit that doing it alone has been difficult. Fortunately, I am not alone in feeling this way. A study by Frontiers identified that the closure of gyms, the lack of socialization, and the heightened psychological issues have resulted in a lack of fitness motivation. Through their interviews, they found the recurring theme that the lack of motivation for fitness was significantly influenced by the lack of presence of others; the presence of others, when engaged in a workout, creates a shared identity and a healthy source of competition. So, how can we bring people, especially those who don’t have access to a gym, together to create a shared identity and sense of motivation?
#2) The Value Proposition: What Makes You Unique?
FitTeam is a mobile app that targets users who want to be part of a fitness community and work out from anywhere — whether it is at home, in the park, or in a gym. Their customer segment is undergraduate students in Canada who like to blend their fitness life with their social life to reach new heights in their fitness journey. With FitTeam, users can become each other’s source of motivation by sharing goals, achievements, workouts, and advice to blend fitness and community all on one platform.
#3) The Pain
FitTeam targets individuals who are struggling to find the motivation to work out. A recent study by researchers at McMaster University found that due to a loss in gym community caused by gym closures, people are less likely to engage in physical activity as a result of increased anxiety levels and a decrease in motivation. With the rise of social media culture, coupled with the rise of workout culture, there is no app on the market that marries the two to create a social media platform for fitness fanatics. Without such an app, many are struggling to pursue their fitness goals in a way that is enjoyable and motivating.
#4) THE PRODUCT: What is it and how does it work?
Introducing FitTeam — Fitter Together.
FitTeam is a mobile app that allows users to remain connected with their gym buddies wherever they are in the world. We know it can be difficult to work out outside of a gym, away from gym buddies. With FitTeam, users can remain motivated and integrated with their fitness community — the perfect source of social motivation. FitTeam is the first social fitness app that seeks to create various communities of gym lovers to share workout-related content with the purpose of motivating one another through advice, goal sharing, achievement appraisal, fitness trends, workout fun, and more. To enhance the UX, there will be content-specific sections within the app; the Moving with Beats section will allow users to post their favorite workouts playlists; the Fit Spots will allow users to share and appreciate their favorite workout locations, whether it is on their office mat, or a park; the Always Learning will allow users to share and learn from advice for beginners, goal-setting tactics, workout tips, how to achieve goals, and more. The general social section will allow users to like each other’s content, follow each other, create workout sessions — both online and offline. By joining FitTeam, users automatically become a team as they help each other achieve their goals through workout fun and support.
